WiFi or not WiFi?
That is the question.
As experts in WiFi systems engineering, we have assembled some Frequently asked questions for the owners of hotels, motels and restaurants who are contemplating the installation of a WiFi system.

What Is WiFi?
WiFi (wireless fidelity) is a transmitting system for a localized wireless computer network. It allows laptop or notebook computers and/or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to send and receive data, and most commonly, utilize the Internet. The physical area a wireless network covers can be anywhere from a small lounge to an entire building consisting of many floors. The greatest convenience of a WiFi network is that the users do not need to use a data cable to connect to the network. Users simply turn on their computer/PDA and automatically connect to the network using a wireless network card.

One of the obvious advantages of not requiring a data cable is that users can connect from anywhere within the coverage area. Not using cables also greatly contributes to safety. There are no cables to trip over.

Contrary to the belief that WiFi may be slow, WiFi can reliably operate at bandwidths of up to 54Mbit/Sec, much faster than any typical broadband Internet connection.

Why do customers need WiFi?
A good question. It is a social trend that today's working population tends to mix work and leisure in one activity. 10 years ago restaurants wouldn't allow the use of cell phones on their premises. Today only a very few maintain that rule, and the majority now allow their customers to use a cell phone freely while sitting at a table.

WiFi everywhere.
Similarly, the usage of WiFi is skyrocketing. It is now very common to see people eating in a restaurant and working. They'll be having discussions with colleagues, doing paperwork, or working on their computer. The biggest advantage to having WiFi (which must be advertised using window signs) is that you are likely to collect more regulars who would use your premises as a rendezvous point for quick sales meetings, dates or whatever.

Can we charge customers for the use of WiFi?
A large percentage of hotels seem to charge about $10 per day, and this is done through a so-called "Closed System". In order for the guest to enter the WiFi system, he/she must receive a password from the front desk when checking in. The password is good for the day, and expires at check out time..
